EMERALD CUT DIAMONDS

The Emerald cut uses a series of flat rectangular facets stepping down off the table to give it a unique brilliance, quite different to that of a Round or curved shaped cut. The flat planes of the outside edges allow for a variety of side stones shapes. Typical pairings would be two or three side baguettes, two half-moons, and other smaller Emeralds, but not Trillions, as their sparkle makes the centre emerald cut look flat.

How many facets?

The approximate number of facets of an Emerald Cut gemstone is 58 (25 crown, 8 girdle & 25 pavilion).

What does it look like?

The Emerald Cut Looks like a rectangle from the top, with truncated corners. These can be beautiful gemstones with stepped facets; the sheen tends to display large flashes of these stepped angles on the pavilion of the gem.

The "Step Cut" has rows of facets that resemble a staircase and usually are four-sided and elongated. It is known as a step cut because its concentric broad, flat planes resemble stair steps.

What works best for Emerald Cut?

With this cut, colour plays a very important role in the beauty of the gemstone. Colour tends to show very dramatically in Emerald Cut Diamonds.

The Emerald Cut was developed specifically for Emeralds to reduce the amount of pressure exerted during cutting and to protect the gemstone from chipping. Today, modern cutting techniques make this less important and it is used for a wide variety of gem types.

Because of the angle, size & shape of the facets, this cut shows less brilliance & fire (dispersion) than other brilliant cut diamonds. However, the Emerald Cut stone reveals a classic beauty & elegance not seen in other cuts. Because of the open & large facets, we recommend a higher colour & clarity than you might consider for a Brilliant Cut stone because they are more likely to become visible at lower grades. The classic Emerald has a length-to-width ratio of 1.50, the recent trend is toward the more square shape.

The Quality Diamonds Emerald Grading Chart has been used to determine the cut quality of individual stones on this website using Table, Depth, Polish, Symmetry and Ratio.
