MARQUISE CUT DIAMONDS
The Marquise is a slender striking cut if well proportioned and popular for "up
market" designer pieces. The shape lends it self to being visually bigger with
a bigger table spread for carat weight than traditional cuts, it has a line of
beauty that can be used running up and down the finger and so is an excellent
option if you want a big, long look for less money.

The standard number of facets of a Marquise Cut gemstone is 58, an adaptation of
the standard brilliant (33 crown, 25 pavilion). However, the pavilion can be
cut with 4, 6 or 8 pavilion main facets.
The Marquise Cut was inspired by the fetching smile of the Marquise de Pompadour
and commissioned by the Sun King, France's Louis XIV, who wanted a Diamond to
match the smile.
The Marquise was one of the most popular shapes in the 1960's to 1980's and like
the Emerald is a traditional shape. This is probably the fourth most popular
shape behind the Round, Princess and Emerald.
The Marquise Cut is also known as the "Navette" shape and looks like a long oval
that has been stretched out to a point at each end (e.g. rugby ball viewed
straight down from the top).
The optimal ratio (length/width) is 2.00.
It is important that the Marquise Cut gem not be too shallow or light will pass
through the back of the diamond and its brilliance and colour will be
diminished.
Marquise provides good brilliance and colour.
It is gorgeous when used as a solitaire or when enhanced by smaller gems.
